Position Summary

The Assistant General Counsel reports to and will be supervised by the Associate General Counsel, with support from the General Counsel and Chief Legal Officer. Conducts legal research, drafts and reviews contracts and other legal documents, and provides practical guidance to mitigate risk and to support achievement of organizational goals and objectives. Responsible for identifying and analyzing legal issues, providing regulatory analysis, presenting clear recommendations, drafting key documents, and supporting complex corporate initiatives.

This position offers a hybrid work schedule, based at our location in Portland, ME.

Job Description

Key Outcomes:

Practical Legal Advice in Support of Business Activities and Initiatives

  • Performs a wide variety of legal tasks to support achievement of organizational goals and objectives, including but not limited to contract drafting and negotiation, statutory and regulatory research and interpretation, and review of policies and procedures;

  • Researches a broad range of healthcare laws and regulations to understand, communicate, and manage risk, including federal and state laws and regulations affecting the licensing, certification and operation of healthcare facilities; Medicare Advantage, US Family Health Plan, Stark Law, and Anti-Kickback laws;

  • Monitors potential changes in applicable laws and regulations, communicates changes to affected teams, and supports resulting implementation projects;

  • Drafts, negotiates and reviews contracts and related documents, including provider agreements, vendor agreements, and confidentiality and business associate agreements; and

  • Provides support for litigation matters, including document collection and review.

Collaboration and Partnering in Support of Enterprise Functions

  • Supports Compliance Department and Privacy Officer on regulatory interpretation and legal issues, including assisting with investigations and audits as needed;

  • Provides wide range of legal support and advice to enterprise shared service teams, including internal audit, finance, human resources, communications, and information technology team in support of organizational projects and change management activities;

  • Assists with corporate initiatives, including enterprise risk management processes, information security initiatives, and corporate (human resources or finance) audits;

  • Coordinates with outside counsel and consultants.

Education/Experience

  • 1-3 years of law firm or in-house counsel experience in healthcare law or related field

  • Experience conducting regulatory research and interpretation required

  • Experience with federal healthcare payer programs preferred

  • Experience with the provision of healthcare services preferred

  • Experience with litigation preferred

Required License(s) and/or Certification(s):

  • JD from an accredited institution

  • Admitted to the practice of law in at least one state of the United States
