Job Description

NREL has an opening for a Fire Protection Engineer. This position will support all technical aspects of the Fire Protection Program within the Environment, Safety, Health, & Quality Office. This position will report to the Fire Protection AHJ and will address site wide fire protection engineering activities as a subject matter expert (SME). Key responsibilities include:

  • Contribute to the development and implementation of NRELs fire protection program in accordance with DOE orders and standards, applicable codes, and NFPA standards.

  • Apply sound fire protection engineering principles to assist in researchers in accomplishing research efforts.

  • Assist in establishing, modifying, and overseeing fire protection program policies and procedures to support implementation of DOE O 420.1C and other applicable codes and standards.

  • Support compliance with applicable hazardous materials codes and standards (e.g., International Fire Code, National Fire Protection Association 2, 30, 45, 55, 855, and 400).

  • Support the implementation of the Life Safety Code (NFPA 101) during the renovation of laboratory facilities.

  • Conduct technical reviews of fire protection drawings and calculations (including but not limited to fire sprinkler systems, fire pumps, storage tanks, special extinguishing systems and fire alarm systems).

  • Participate in activity hazard analysis for research experiments as fire protection subject matter expert. These may involve batteries, hydrogen, refrigerants, semiconductors, processes involving hazardous materials, and other unique activities. Work involves assessing how various codes apply to a particular activity and ensuring project team incorporates accordingly. New and novel experiments are expected.

  • Develop, implement, and oversee policies and procedures for inspection, testing, and maintenance of required fire and life safety systems (fire protection systems, fire barriers, emergency lighting, etc.)

  • Manage the NREL Fire Barrier Program, including training, plan reviews, and inspections.

  • Participate in project management for new construction activities as it pertains to fire and life safety. This includes plan review, construction meetings, field inspections, and commissioning. Serve as fire protection lead on multiple new construction projects and tenant improvements.

  • Independent development of Fire Hazard Analysis (FHA) and Fire Protection Assessments (FPA). Work collaboratively to resolve issues identified in assessments. Manage analytics related to assessment findings.

  • Interface diplomatically with a wide range of staff including scientific researchers, management, administrative, safety personnel, and external stakeholders.

  • Participate in industry associations and work groups. Maintain current with new developments and technologies within the fire protection industry.

Basic Qualifications

Relevant Bachelor's Degree and 9 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant Master's Degree and 7 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant PhD and 4 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant JD and 4 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Applies extensive technical expertise, and has full knowledge of other related disciplines. Contributes to the development of new concepts, techniques and standards. Considered internal subject matter expert. Extensive knowledge of laws, regulations, principles, procedures and practices related to specific field. Excellent leadership, project management and problem solving skills. Ability to use various computer software programs.

Additional Required Qualifications

  • Advanced technical knowledge of DOE fire protection Orders and Standards.

  • Ability to apply the International Fire Code and National Fire Protection Association standards (e.g., IFC, NFPA 2, 13, 30, 37, 45, 55, 45, 30, 497, 654, 101, 110, 400, etc.).

  • Ability to read and interpret building drawings and piping and instrumentation drawings.

  • Familiarity with 10 Code of Federal Regulation 851 and OSHA regulations.

  • Innovative, solution-oriented, and creative thinking.

  • Self-motivated with demonstrated ability to negotiate, influence, and perform independently.

  • Excellent interpersonal and oral/written communication skills.

  • Proficient computer skills, including MS Office Suite, email and ability to quickly learn database software applications such as FileMaker.

  • Demonstrative experience with technical analysis and report writing.

  • Ability to travel on occasion.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Licensed in Colorado with demonstrable specialization in Fire Protection Engineering

  • Master's degree in fire protection engineering or other relevant discipline.

  • The ability to determine design conformance with multiple codes which are enforced by various regulatory officials before, during and after construction.

  • Ability to interpret and resolve conflicting codes and standards in order to support research goals.

  • Experience with inspecting and testing fire protection systems.

  • Experience consulting on fire protection requirements during the design-build construction process.

  • Experience working at a Department of Energy site.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)

Job Profile: Professional IV / Annual Salary Range: $95,500 - $171,900

NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee’s salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.
